It is very difficult for parents to provide basic necessities for their families such as food and shelter and it became painfully evident to us that many children are never given the opportunity to go to 1st grade. Education takes less priority, and many of the children end up working in the fields alongside their parents by the age of eight. For that reason, we knew we needed to do more in order to keep the children out of the fields and place them in schools where they can learn and grow.
In 2001, HIM began a School Sponsorship Program providing uniforms, shoes, backpacks, school supplies, and an education. Preschool children also have access to medical and dental care, and a nutritious meal. School sponsorship is for children in Gualan and in villages in Zacapa. A representative of HIM monitors the progress of the children by frequently meeting with their teachers and parents.
