The Helping Babies Breathe (HBB) Program was started by Board Member Barbara Engers, a Registered Nurse specializing in Neonatal Intensive Care. The HBB Program was designed to teach neonatal resuscitation to the Comadronas (Midwives) and Firemen in areas of Guatemala where resources are limited.
Our medical teams provide classes where they learn valuable new information and skills for the care of babies who need assistance at birth (approximately 10%). These classes also cover breast-feeding, hand hygiene, umbilical cord care and bathing. The age of the Comadronas (Midwives) who attend range from 39 to 80 and they in turn mentor the younger women. One of the Midwives who attended was 68 years old and learned to be a Comadrona from her mother. We found out that she had been delivering babies for 50 years and had delivered 8 out of 9 of her own children. We have recently broadened the class participants to include Firefighters who are also called upon frequently to deliver babies. They are very grateful to have the opportunity to learn these skills to help them in future birthing situations.
