Pueblo Modelo Young Gardeners Project

Empowering our volunteers, staff, and donors to positively impact the lives of people in need.

The Pueblo Modelo Garden Project
In addition to preparing the children for grade school at the Pueblo Modelo Daycare, Hearts In Motion (HIM) seeks to educate them about how to work their lands. What’s a better way to take advantage of nature and use your environment by learning how to garden? With that in mind, a Pueblo Modelo garden project was created and named Young Gardeners International (YGI).
Three families from the Pueblo Modelo Daycare were selected to participate in a pilot program for this project to learn how to garden.  Aiden Mitchell, a young gardener in the United State is mentoring the children. Via his YouTube videos, he’s teaching the kids the different stages of gardening.  A HIM Guatemalan staff member, Keyli, is using the videos from Aiden to teach gardening classes to the children and their families. Keyli is also joined by other HIM staff members, Ana, and Alicia (affectionately known as “the ladies at the center”) to supervise the gardens and document their progress. The families were provided with gardening tools, water containers, chicken wire, cinder blocks, fertilized soil, and starter plants. To incentivize the children and their families, prizes will also be given for the best garden. The garden will be rated from 1 to 3 and the prizes will be awarded accordingly.
This is an experimental project. If it is successful, it will be implemented throughout the Pueblo Modelo Daycare and possibly for the grade school children in the HIM school program in Pueblo Modelo. The hope is for the children who have gone through the program to become mentors to a new group of children.  Also, the mentors will continue maintaining their own gardens.
According to the recent update from Keyli, the children are very excited about the project and have been enjoying working their land. The parents are very happy because they will have vegetables and fruits from their gardens for their families. The families expressed to Keyli that it has been a great experience working in the gardens with their children.
This is already a success!!!
