Dental Surgeon Brings Smiles to Guatemala: Brad Jarvis Shares His Journey of Service

For over 20 years, Dr. Brad Jarvis of Jarvis, Nelson & Pedey Family Dentistry has served the Spokane community. In recent years, his impact has reached even farther—deep into rural Guatemala—where he’s provided essential dental care to those in desperate need.

Over the past three years, Brad has traveled with a team of dentists, surgeons, and hygienists through the nonprofit Hearts In Motionto offer free dental clinics. Services include extractions, cleft lip and palate surgeries, and the distribution of antibiotics. On just one trip, the team treated 70–90 patients per day over one week, performing nearly 1,000 extractions.

A Mission Fueled by Family and Friendship

Brad was first introduced to these mission trips by fellow dentist and friend, Dr. David Engen, joining him on his first journey. That initial trip was life-changing—not only for the patients but also for Brad and his family.

His daughter, fluent in Spanish, accompanied him and served as a translator, streamlining patient care and supporting the team. On their next trip, four hygienists joined the group, prepping patients and distributing antibiotics so the dental team could reach even more people.

Building a Movement of Care

Recognizing the urgent need for dental services in Guatemala, Hearts In Motion is expanding its efforts by organizing more trips throughout the year. They’re actively seeking dentists, oral surgeons, hygienists, and students to join the cause.

Brad encourages students and newly graduated professionals to volunteer—not only for the invaluable hands-on experience but also for the cultural insight and professional camaraderie it fosters. “It changes your perspective,” he says. “It strengthens your skills, builds relationships, and makes a real difference.”

How You Can Help

In addition to volunteers, the team is always in need of supplies like gloves, masks, and antiseptic instruments. Individuals or companies interested in donating or getting involved are encouraged to support this growing movement.

With each trip, more smiles are restored, more pain is relieved, and more lives are touched—all thanks to volunteers like Brad Jarvis and the dedicated teams behind Hearts In Motion.
