Helping Mothers Survive & Helping Babies Survive
HMS and HBS training modules are designed for healthcare providers at all levels—including midwives, nurses, doctors, birth attendants, and Bomberos (Firefighters)—who care for mothers and babies or respond to complications during childbirth.
What We Do
Teach essential newborn resuscitation techniques for an infant who needs assistance at birth as well as essentials of newborn care.
These programs equip frontline health workers to:
- Deliver evidence-based, high-quality care
- Recognize and respond to life-threatening complications
- Use hands-on, team-based learning to build and maintain skills
Training includes:
- Low-dose, high-frequency (LDHF) learning
- Simulation-based practice with immediate feedback
- Use of tools like ambu bags, masks, and suction bulbs for newborn resuscitation
Sustainability and Maintaining Relationships:
- Train the Trainer
- Identify and train local and regional leaders to teach the courses
- Provide refresher classes and follow-up
Accessible Learning for All
- HMS and HBS use visual guidebooks, flipcharts, and posters with clear instructions.
- Training does not require electricity or advanced technology, making it ideal for resource-limited settings.
Specialized Training Modules
HMS: Bleeding After Birth Complete (BABC)
Teaches birth attendants skills for post birth care to help prevent, recognize, and manage hemorrhage of a mother.
HBS: ENC1 (Helping Babies Breathe)
Teaches essential newborn resuscitation techniques using simple, low-cost tools.

Helping Babies Survive (HBS)
is an initiative of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), developed with the World Health Organization (WHO) and supported by USAID, Laerdal Global Health, and other partners.
Helping Mothers Survive (HMS)
is led by Jhpiego, a Johns Hopkins University affiliate, in collaboration with Laerdal Global Health and global stakeholders.
Our Work in Guatemala
The Hearts In Motion HBS/HMS Team works in the Guatemalan departments of Zacapa, Chiquimula, El Progreso, and Izabal.
- Teams typically include 4–8 volunteers and at least one interpreter
- Each mission trip includes six full-day courses
- Worksites are selected based on local needs and student training records
- Our team distributes NeoNatalie training dolls, course materials, and medical equipment to our Guatemalan partners for in country training.
When students demonstrate safe and effective use of resuscitation tools, they receive their own equipment set:
- Ambu bag and suction device set: approx. $44 (discounted by Laerdal Global Health)
- NeoNatalie training doll: approx. $135 (also discounted)
Donations are greatly appreciated to help offset the cost of these basic items to equip nurses and emergency personnel with tools to save lives.
